Osho Ko Hsuan School
A co-educational boarding school - founded in Devon, England to give practical meaning to Osho's suggestions for educating children. The passing years have shown his suggestions to be valid and excellent.

First, no child is accepted as a pupil at Ko Hsuan unless he or she has positive wish to be a pupil at Ko Hsuan.  There can be many ways for a child to have a genuine YES.  Often they have friends at Ko Hsuan who are enjoying themselves.  Or they hanker for the adventure of being away from home and family.  They may simply wish to please their parents.  In any event, they always have a trial period during which they can confirm their wish to be there, or change their mind.

No pupil is ever told they are bad in an objective sense!
Teaching is always on a personal basis. The child may have an unfortunate personal habit like spitting. A teacher may tell the child that spitting is offensive. Another teacher may tell the child to spit if he likes. For that teacher it is not offensive. The child is left with the decision to spit, or not to spit.

School meetings are an important part of school life. Adults and kids are given the opportunity of giving and receiving feed back from each other. Kids often demonstrate a surprising sensitivity about each other.  As with all aspects of life at the school, the point of awareness is: "how do my actions affect others? Am I expressing my freedom to the detriment of others?"

If a child behaves antisocially - bullying, stealing, damaging school property - he or she will be asked to modify this behavior on the basis that the smooth running of the school cannot be upset by his or her behavior. If the bad habit persists the child will finally be asked to leave. Not on the basis that the child was bad. Simply on the basis that the child was unable/unwilling to fit into school life.

During the first months a new pupil will be given a lot of freedom. Even quite young children arrive angry and rebellious. They may not want to attend classes. They are indulged for a time. Finally they will be reminded that this is a school where children come to learn and that they have agreed to be at Ko Hsuan. Children are smart. In most cases they understand the benefit of attending class to learn the three Rs - Reading, Riting and Rithmatic. Most kids start working and when they do it is often at an astonishing rate.

The boys and girls of all ages are allowed to explore each others' sexuality. This is tempered by the rules that govern co-educational boarding schools.

No religious teaching is given, but all are encouraged to broaden their interest in religious, artistic and scientific themes.

The pupil to adult ratio at Ko Hsuan is about one adult for four children. The staff are able to keep in close contact with each pupil's situation.

All the school chores, cooking, cleaning and laundry are shared by pupils and staff alike.

Ko Hsuan School is a registered school that complies with all the rules and is regularly visited by Her Majesty's inspectors.
